You know, I love technology. I love all the advances that have been made.

And then I do something stupid like break my blog.

My own fault – I was trying to edit something that I wasn’t sure how to edit and managed to royally screw up the code. This makes sense as I have not done any real coding in almost ten years.

Then this weekend, I broke the power cord to my computer. So no blog updating, unless I wanted to type on my phone (I did not).

So I had a low-tech weekend. And it was kind of nice. Sure, I had the DVR to watch, which isn’t that low tech, and I ran on the treadmill while watching the 9/11 coverage yesterday, but it was kind of nice to not be tethered to my computer. I didn’t realize just how much I relied on it.

(And yes, a new power cord is arriving tonight. A girl can only go so long…)

I have been a very bad budgeter as of late.

I blame the house.

But really, it’s my own fault.

I’m not in any sort of dire straits or anything. In fact, I’m doing quite well, financially speaking. But my spending feels a bit out of control. I’m blowing budget categories left and right.

A lot of it does have to do with the house. Moving from an apartment to a house has meant a lot of new expenses. Not just the typical things like utilities and standard maintenance costs, but buying all the things that I didn’t own, like a hose and a stepladder and various lawn care tools. And then there is my list of projects. Sure, some of those won’t cost me anything except for some labor, but some of those things are expensive. My problem is that I’m planning for the expensive things. It’s the inexpensive things that are adding up.

For example, this weekend, I went to The Container Store. It’s a dangerous place for me, because I love organization supplies. I love boxes and baskets and fun things to put things in. It’s an obsession. But I was pretty good. The problem is that even though I bought things that I knew I needed (or could use, anyway), it still adds up. What did I buy? A set of stacking shelves for the storage closet (to match a set I already have and love), some storage bags for bedding that is currently piled up on the closet floor, a new file box to keep all of my house-related things (bills and repair records – the super important stuff is in the fire safe) and a few items from their travel sale, since I’m hoping to take a quick trip to Europe next fall if all goes as planned. Okay, so I didn’t need the travel things right now, but they were on sale (a new luggage strap and an electric converter) so I figured it was as good a time as any to purchase.

But I need to get things under control. Start logging all my purchases as I make them. Figure out where things are going off the rails and get them back on track.

I do love my house. I’ve not had one moment of regret. I just have to remember that I can’t be putting all my money into it at once. First things first. Like finish unpacking all of the boxes (of course, it looks like I need another bookshelf if I want to finish all that unpacking, so…).

So even though I don’t know whether or not I’m buying a house next week, I’ve started packing. In order to save money, I’m doing most of the move myself (everything but furniture, or at lest that’s the plan). So I’m going to be doing it slowly, taking boxes over in my car a couple of times a week until we hit the actual move day. To make this process less painful, I’ve started packing up boxes, things that I know that I can live without for a while.

And what have I learned? I have a whole lot of stuff. Way more stuff than I need. I’m trying to cull through as I pack, but that’s easier said than done. I’ve got a whole library of books, which is problem number one. Lots of crafting stuff. And then there’s just… stuff. I don’t know how to describe it.

One thing I will have to be careful of in the house is that I don’t let the stuff take over. I’m going from a two bedroom apartment (where one bedroom belongs to my roommate) to a three bedroom house. I will have an attic. I cannot let the stuff get away from me.

(I must admit, the attic freaks me out a bit, so I don’t see myself storing too much stuff in there – maybe the Christmas decorations and the two Rubbermaid boxes of childhood mementos that I’ve hung on to. So that might work in my favor.)

I give up. From now on, all posts will be called Auto Draft, because I cannot get it fixed.** I have tried all the fixes recommended in the various forums, and nothing. I did manage to get my site stuck in maintenance mode for a while this week. That was fun.

On to the content. I’ve been reading a lot about people doing 100 things projects – getting rid of 100 things that you don’t need. It seems kind of daunting, especially since I currently have three bags of donations taking up space in my bedroom. Well, might as well give it a shot. And yes, I’m going to count those bags – as three things. After all, they’ve been taking up space for too long, so getting them out of the apartment will count for something. I’m just not counting all the things inside.

The way the project works is kind of up to you. You can count things as small as you want. However, if you throw away that giant bag of 1000 cotton balls and count that as 1000 things, that doesn’t so much count. It would really defeat the purpose of the whole project.

So far, I’ve gone through just a few drawers and already have over twenty things to get rid of. Some things were tossed, others went into a box for donating. I’m still going. Need to tackle the kitchen next. Yipes.

**Apparently, something I did that didn’t seem to fix it actually did fix it – at least going forward. Good bye, Auto Draft!

Looks like a lot of people are into the idea of decluttering with all the comments on my post about hoarding. I have to admit, my personal decluttering made zero progress this weekend.

Wait, I take that back. I got rid of two shirts that were irreparably stained. They weren’t of a material that would make good rags, and after trying every stain removal remedy in the book, I gave in. But I spent the weekend reading a book and finishing my half-marathon training. (Race is next weekend – eeek!) I also threw the Mr. Coffee Iced Tea maker into the donate pile. Why did I need that thing anyway? It’s not like iced tea is hard to make.

Part of me feels like decluttering is such a big effort. There’s so much to do. X number of items a week seems an easy way to do it. I desperately need to clean out all of my closets – take everything out, look at it, and put it back if it’s worth keeping. I’ve just not found the time to do it yet. Not going to happen this coming weekend, obviously, but maybe sometime after that. I also need to remember that I don’t have to do it all at once. If I have to leave my closet half-tackled, so be it. The idea of taking everything out and not putting it away the same day makes me cringe a little bit though!

Does anyone else always get sucked into those tv shows about people who have houses filled with clutter? Some are more lighthearted, like Clean House, others are kind of dark, like Hoarders. Either way, I find them completely fascinating. People have just accumulated so much stuff, and it’s always such a mess, with piles everywhere. And yet, the people also always know exactly where everything is.

Watching these shows always makes me want to go clean out my closet.

At first, you don’t understand how people get to that point. And I still don’t understand how anyone can stand to live among rotting trash. But I guess you just get used to it and then you stop noticing the smell and the flies. But then I start to think about the things that I own. How many storage boxes do I have in my closet? How much stuff is saved under my bed. It’s not trash, but is it really stuff I need? On some level, maybe I’m saving it so I don’t have to spend money later. And that’s frugal. But at the same time, it’s a little bit wasteful too.

So here’s my challenge. I want to get rid of 5 things a week for the next month. And maybe for the month after that. See how much I can pare down. It will be nice to be free from some of this stuff that I have accumulated, and it might make organizing my closet a whole lot easier.

So as I have mentioned, I am currently between roommates. My roommate moved out in November, and my new roommate is moving in sometime in late-July. While I’m a little sad to be giving up my solo life, I’m glad that someone else will be around, and glad to have the help with the rent for sure.

When my last roommate moved in, it was pretty quick, and I sort of cleared space for her at a rapid clip. That meant that a lot of things that I should have sorted through just got tossed into bins and boxes and squirreled away. What I should have done was go through things and decide what I did and didn’t need to keep. When I moved into this apartment, I had just finished law school (and the bar exam). I had a lot of things (supplies, clothing) that were geared more toward a graduate student’s life than toward my new life.

When said roommate moved out, I sort of unpacked all the boxes and put things back into the extra room. Sure, I went through some things, but hey, I had the space, so why bother going through everything with a fine toothed comb? But now that I have to clean out the room again, I’ve decided to start looking at what I have. I’m doing it in small chunks, a shelf here, a drawer there. It’s much easier than saying “Everything in this closet must be reviewed today.”

I’ve discovered that I still have a lot of school supplies. Binders, notebooks, paper, binder clips, pens, highlighters, post-it notes, etc. Lots and lots of school supplies. And yet I can’t bring myself to get rid of it. Do I plan to go back to school anytime soon? Nope. But I can’t just throw it out. It still has value! I do okay getting rid of books because I can swap them or donate them. But I can’t just trash something that still has use. It feels so wasteful! Now that doesn’t mean that I’m saving trash or any of the other stereotypical things that hoarders tend to keep, but I’m struggling to throw out things that still can be used.

Clearly, I should do something about this, see if I know anyone who might be able to use this stuff. I have a friend starting grad school in the fall. Maybe she could use a box of highlighters.

So in the news this morning, everyone’s talking about what Apple might announce today, and the assumption is that it is some sort of tablet device, perhaps a counter to the Amazon Kindle and the Barnes and Noble Nook. Already, I have coworkers who are planning to buy it when they don’t even know what it is!

While I understand the desire to have the newest and the best items, I think there are some benefits to waiting. I like to wait and see what people think of things before I buy them. In addition, this lets the company work out any bugs with the systems. And hey, sometimes the price ends up dropping too.

Of course, watching for reviews and talking to people who have bought the new item just makes me want to have it for myself even more.

I don’t have any plans to buy the new Apple product, if it is really a tablet. I have a Kindle already (the old version) and really don’t need anything different. But what about you? Are you an early adopter? Are you planning to watch for updates of the Apple event online, constantly refreshing any live feeds?

My roommate came back to clean up the rest of her stuff on Tuesday night, so yesterday, I went into what is now my guest room for the time being to see what I could do with the room now that she’s gone. Not surprisingly, her version of clean and my version of clean are two very different things. But once I got the cleaning done, it was time to see if I wanted to move things back into the room.

I knew that I wanted to bring in some pictures for the walls. She had taken them down when she moved in, and the room looked bare now that all of her things were gone. I was glad that I had kept everything.

One of the other big things in the room is a floor to ceiling bookshelf. I’ve had it for years, and always kept it full (or close to overflowing). Now, all my books have been moved to different rooms, boxes under the bed, boxes hidden in the back of a closet, everywhere. I also got rid of a lot of books while I was at it. So the next step was to unearth all the books I had stowed away and go through them, putting them up on the shelves and also getting rid of the ones that I no longer wanted.

I’m most excited to have the closet space back. My closet is currently crammed with clothes and boxes and all sorts of things, and it’s nice to be able to use that closet space for the time being. Again, it will be useful to really go through my stuff, spread it out, and see what I can get rid of.

I may be looking for a new roommate after the holidays. There’s just too much to do between now and Christmas to worry about getting a new roommate, and I’m reluctant to have someone move in and then be out of town for the holidays. But for now, I’m going to use the extra space and enjoy the extra space. Nothing worse than a lonely, empty room.

Twice over the past week, I have seen advertising discussing the latest and greatest fashions for the fall season – all “inexpensive Recessionista style!”

Recessionista? The word in itself is kind of ridiculous.

But the best part was that the items for sale were not anywhere near what I would consider inexpensive, frugal, or appropriate for someone worried about the recession. If you are worried about money, don’t buy this season’s new $700 purse.

On some level, the statement “Frugal is the new black” is funny. It’s especially funny to those of us who have always been frugal (even if we do buy $700 purses, we’ve saved in other areas to make that happen). But I’m starting to find the whole Recessionista trend a little annoying and slightly insulting. I get this vision of rich spoiled young women (the sort you find on many reality tv shows) going about as if they’re so great because they’re buying slightly less expensive things and doesn’t that make them fabulous? Doing it not because it’s necessary but because it’s the “in” thing to do.

And on the other end of the spectrum, there’s the young woman who really would love to dress in fancier clothes for work but truly can’t afford the look she so desires. By making do and accessorizing with inexpensive pieces, she’s truly being a Recessionista.
