Why You Should Regularly Shop Around for Insurance

January 15, 2018 By Susan Paige Leave a Comment

Once you have an insurance policy, regardless if it is for your auto, home, or even life, you shouldn’t stop shopping around just because you’ve made a selection. Now, this doesn’t mean you need to keep searching every day, but it is wise to regularly explore new options to see if there is a better deal available.

If you don’t necessarily want to manage the task of constantly being on the lookout, there are certain instances where taking a look at other options is always smart. Here are a few times when you should take a moment to shop around for insurance.

Your Coverage Needs Change

One of the best times to explore your insurance options is whenever your coverage needs change. This can occur due to a life event, such as a marriage or birth of a child, a major purchase, like a home or vehicle, or even if the value of your property has fluctuated.

If the size of your household has increased or decreased, you may need to examine your life insurance needs to make sure you have the proper level of coverage based on your new family size. Similarly, if you are a homeowner, and the value of your property has increased, the amount of homeowner’s insurance you need may have also risen. On the other end, if you pay off your car, you may need less insurance than you are paying for now.

Since you will already need to make changes to your policy, it only makes sense to compare your options across multiple insurers. That way you can guarantee that you are getting the best deal for the amount of coverage you require.

You Are Considering a Change

For purchases like homes and vehicles, you can actually explore how it will impact your current policy in advance, and use those details to compare options from other companies. For example, many auto insurers can tell you what your cost would be for insuring nearly any make and model, as long as you can provide pertinent details, like whether the vehicle is new or used, it’s current condition, and whether a loan is involved.

This can be incredibly helpful for discovering how a purchase may impact other financial areas of your life, making it easier to plan a budget for the future.

Your Policy is About to Renew

All insurance policies renew on a particular schedule, and the process is usually automatic with your current provider. However, you’ll likely be notified that this is about to happen, allowing it to act as a reminder to explore other options.

For example, if your auto insurance renews annually, then use the notification as a sign to compare your insurance options with other carriers. This is also an excellent time to audit your coverage, ensuring that what you are paying for actually meets your needs based on your situation as it stands at that time.

Ultimate, you should always make sure you compare your options when it comes to insurance, particularly during any of the situations described above. Otherwise, you could simply end up paying too much for the wrong coverage, a costly mistake no one wants to make.
