4 Tips to Save Money on Large Purchases

July 18, 2018 By Susan Paige Leave a Comment

As much as we might not want to, we all need to make large purchases from time to time. This could be a new TV for the living room, a new couch to replace your broken one, or even a new bed for your new home. Whatever the purchase, these can often cost you hundreds of dollars (or more).

While some can afford that kind of thing, most Americans are in debt, so it isn’t a guarantee that people will afford that kind of thing. However, instead of going without these large purchases that are sometimes necessary, there are ways to save money on them, like the four included in this article.

Search For Deals

Whenever you are making a big-ticket purchase like a bed, a car, a couch, a TV or any number of other things, the first thing you should do is search for deals. The good thing is, there is a good chance there will be some sort of deal out there between all of the different stores and retailers.

These deals can range and some are certainly better than others. Of course, you still want to buy a quality item, so make sure not to simply buy something because it’s on sale or because it is the cheapest option available to you. Also, be sure to read the fine print and ensure that the deal going on does indeed include the item you are going to buy.

Buy Used If it Makes Sense

A surefire way to save some money on items is to but them used. Some stores will sell used items and if not, you can surely find some on craigslist or another online classifieds sites. They will often be available for a fraction of the cost of new items, but they are likely to be older and have some wear and tear.

Of course, you need to also know when buying used is better than buying new. Some items are perfectly fine to buy used, but others you want to get brand new. So while used items will almost certainly save you some cash, it isn’t always worth it if you’re getting low-quality or damaged items.

Know When To Buy

That’s right, even the time of year that you buy a product or item can impact how much you will spend on it. Some things will be cheaper in the winter months, while others will come with a discount in the summer. So if you can wait to time the market right, you could be in for some huge savings.

For example, many electronics will go on sale right before christmas, and many more during the “back to school” times in July and August. New inventory often hits furniture stores at the beginning of the year, so around then could be good to take last years’ inventory off the books for them.

Don’t Be Afraid to Haggle

While this, of course, won’t work for every type of product or store, there is often a bit of wiggle room when dealing with a large or expensive purchase. Haggling a lower price can be a good way to not only get what you want, but do so for less money. Haggling on a new or used vehicle is almost par for the course as everyone seems to do it.

Also, if you can’t talk them down in terms of price, maybe try get some bonuses thrown in or save some money on insurance or coverage. If you want to save money on big purchase, you have to get creative, and this is a great example of that.

In conclusion, these big purchases we all need to make from time to time don’t have to ravish our bank accounts, as long as you use these tips to help you save money.
