DIY Ways to Reuse your Prom Dress

November 5, 2018 By Susan Paige Leave a Comment

Your prom night is one you will never forget, and your dress is a huge part of that. But once your prom is over, what can you do with your dress? Prom dresses are not only beautiful; they are usually costly too, so only using them the once can be seen as a waste. So don’t let your prom dress stay hung in your wardrobe, read this article giving you some tips on how to remix and reuse your dress.

Re-model it

One idea is to make your prom dress into a Halloween costume. Themed parties are always happening, and what better time to customise your prom dress. Repurposing your prom dress into a costume or themed party dress is a fab way to ensure you can wear it again. You can make slight tweaks to turn your dress into a special costume for example a zombie prom girl, or a superhero such as spider-woman or poison ivy.

Donate it

Another idea is to donate it, either to charity or to a friend of family member who can also have their time to shine in a dress you have spent so much time choosing. Knowing your dress will be well loved and enjoyed by someone else and helping them experience the same joy you experienced when wearing your dress is fantastic. Use a search engine to find local dress donation spots in your area.

Re-make it

How about altering the dress to make it into a 2 piece, you could detach the bottom to create a top, or detach the top and sow the bottom half into a nice flowy maxi skirt that you can pair with other tops. If you aren’t able to sow yourself, you can take it to a professional seamstress to cut it and sow it so it has a proper hem. If you chose a crop top or two-piece prom dress, you can easily just pair each item with someone else in your wardrobe, mixing and matching to create different outfits. Our JJ’s House designer Jessica recommends adding sleeves to your dress by using some extra material from the lining of the dress, or sowing up a deep neckline or slit to use the dress for a more formal occasion.

Re-purpose it

If you don’t fancy changing the dress into another form of outfit, why not repurpose the material? You can use the dress material to make pillowcases, or a tote bag and more. If you have plus size prom dresses, or dresses with lots of fabric, why not make a blanket or two? There are many you tube videos on how to do this, so why not get creative and let your prom dresses live on.
