There are a million and one ways to save money. But with so many tips and tricks, how can you possibly try them all to see what works best for you? Fear not — I have gathered the seven best saving tips that I’ve heard just for you!
Add Social Outings to Your Budget
It’s really easy for your pre-planned $30 dinner to turn into a $150 night on the town. And I’m a firm believer in the treat yo self philosophy, but a budget’s a budget. So while you definitely have to go out and enjoy life, make sure you do it on budget. And that means that a great saving tip is to make sure that your social adventures make it into your budget… beforehand.
Set Goals Even if They’re Small
Saving money takes some actual work, which is why the next best of the saving tips that I’ve ever heard is to set small goals. Want to build up an emergency fund that covers you for three months? Try starting a bit smaller and aiming to hit $1,000 by the end of the year. That way you don’t feel like you’re strapped for cash because you’re stashing it all away.
Get a Good Money Mindset
This year I am learning all about the power of mindset. And having a good money mindset is crucial to having a nice plump savings account that you can feel good about. I get that this doesn’t seem like a saving tip, but it is! Without that clear money mind, all of your financial plans are going to go kaput by the end of the money.
Pay Yourself
Seriously, give yourself some cash to spend. Bear with me here because I know spending money also doesn’t seem like a great saving tip. But if you’re hoarding away all your cash chances are you’re going to break and spend what you have. With a small allowance of money, you can spend you’re less likely to feel deprived.
Utilize Rewards
Another awkward saving tip that has to do with spending money. But, if you’re going to spend money, make sure that you’re getting something in return (besides whatever it is that you’re buying). Earning those rewards means that down the line you can save money on something else… but make sure that you pay off those credit card bills ASAP, or all that savings is going to be spent paying it off.
Make an Actual Savings Plan
Saving for the sake of saving is really hard to do. So make it easier by designing yourself a plan. Whether you’re saving for an emergency fund, the downpayment on a house or those really expensive shoes you probably don’t need, having a savings plan can make saving much easier. Now that’s a saving tip!
Make Yourself a Reminder
Much like you remind yourself that you have a doctor’s appointment or you need to take Fluffy to the vet, a great saving tip is to set yourself a reminder that you need to save. Maybe it’s a once-weekly reminder in your Google Calendar to deposit that cash or a series of post-it notes strewn about your house — whatever it is, it’ll be easier to do if you remember to do it!
