Are you interested in certifications that increase earnings? They certainly can help you earn more money; there are many career fields that require or encourage you to get certified in a certain skill or skill set. It’s impossible to write a definitive article on ALL certification programs, but if you are at a crossroads with your career and are looking to move up (or move on) you should consider a number of career fields that require more than entry-level skills.
Why? Certifications that increase earnings set a newcomer apart–if you apply for a new job with certification in hand you have a distinct advantage over someone who doesn’t have your credentials or who are still trying to complete their program. But what kinds of programs are out there?
Certifications That Increase Earnings
Remember that there are certifications that get your foot in the door (paralegals, phlebotomists, med techs, x-ray techs, etc.) and then there are the ones that increase your earnings. These can include highly technical credentials like the Microsoft Certified IT Profesional or a CPA license.
The CPA certification is a great example–you do NOT have to be a CPA to work as an accountant. If you have a relevant Bachelor’s degree you can get hired and make a reasonable amount of money. But a CPA license requires a test to earn the license, and over time the pay difference between these two can grow to as much as $50k between the CPA and the non-CPA accountant.
If you get certified as an Exercise Physiologist and work in that capacity instead of working as a fitness instructor, your pay difference could jump as high as four thousand dollars per year.
Project Management certification makes those in highly technical career fields more employable–and promotable. You can be an IT professional without a certification like the Certified in Risk and Information Systems Control (CRISC), but the average salary for these certified workers is estimated at more than $130 thousand a year.
Some 26 thousand people hold this credential according to one credentialing official site which adds that “CRISC is the highest-paying certification of the year”.
Study And Testing
What do all of these programs have in common? You’ll be likely required to take some form of instruction (or show proof of such where required), study for a certification exam, and await the results.
Once you have been certified, it’s important to let your HR department and supervisor know right away–having such credentials potentially opens up many more opportunities at your current workplace or elsewhere depending on the certification and how much more money you can earn with it. You may be required to test in person for some credentials, but you may be able to attend and test remotely for others.
Certifications can earn more money–if you aren’t sure where to start, ask your supervisor what credentials are most valued in your current workplace and begin your search from there. If you are looking at a career change, it may be helpful to talk to a college admissions officer or career advisor.
