The Best Ways to Use Your Student Discount

October 14, 2021 By Susan Paige Leave a Comment

Ah, how being a student is a whirlwind of an experience. The highs and lows of student life are a right of passage for some. Student life in America has been glamorized somewhat by famous films such as American Pie, Legally Blonde, and Pitch Perfect. Still, life as a student in America is better than most college experiences worldwide. The frats, sports, and world-renowned levels of education make American colleges the most prestigious in the world.

Yes, it’s well-known that being a student is expensive. And yes, it’s very well-known that students have to pay off debts that can amount to an average of $38,792 for a standard honorary degree. But the experience is oh so worth it. Below, we will explore one of the many perks of being a student, the much sought-after student discount.

Online Shopping

Having a student discount is like having Willy Wonka’s Golden Ticket – absolute gold dust. If you have one, there’s no doubt that people will ask you for a student discount code for their online shop. There’s an extensive list of retailers and online shops that support student discounts – ASOS, Nasty Gal, Banana Republic are to name but a few.

Apple, GrubHub, Freshly, and Chick-Fil-A have also all either currently support or have supported student discounts. It’s not just fashion. The list of stores and brands that support student discounts is truly exhaustive, but this NovoResume blog shows 99+ of them. And, the discounts aren’t half bad. Most brands will offer 10%+ discounts as standard – you’ll rarely see a 5% student discount. People have been known to enroll in free online courses that the student discount supports to get a student discount, and who can blame them.

Contracts and Insurance

Most people have at least one contract or type of insurance. For students, the most common are cell phone contracts and motor insurance. Luckily, both are known for offering lucrative student discounts. Apple, in particular, is great at showcasing huge student discounts for tech, such as the extortionately priced MacBook. Even with the student discount, the MacBook is still stupidly priced.

Still, other cell phone providers offer great student discounts for reduced monthly tariffs. The price of cell phone tariffs seems to be rising each year, with the latest iPhone 13 Pro costing around $70 for a decent contract deal. Student discounts can bring the cost down massively.

Insurance is another great place for students to whip out their student discount privilege. Auto insurance discounts like the good student discount can give you a nice chunk off of your premium that varies from provider to provider. For example, the Allstate student discount for single students under the age of 25 achieving a GPA of 2.7 or above can access their offer.

Some insurers offer a discount if the student attends a school more than 100 miles away from where their car lives. Obviously, they know the car isn’t going to be on the roads while the student is away.

In-Store Shopping

Although more than 60% of people now prefer to shop online – taking a trip to the mall is just as popular as it has ever been. Even if it is to simply window shop. Luckily, however, there are probably as many brick-and-mortar stores that support the student discount, if not more. Plus, most online shops still have brick-and-mortar stores, like Nike and Victoria’s secret; it’s just that online shopping is slightly more popular now.

The best advice is to keep your student discount card, or at least the app showing your student discount registration details, with you when you shop. You never know when you might walk into a store or restaurant to find a student discount offer. Some 83% of students say they shop where a student discount is, so more retailers and restaurants offer various discounts to beat the competition.

Travel

Now we can start talking about travel again – travel is a great place to use a student discount. You’re more likely to find a deal traveling nationally rather than internationally. For example, some hotel chains like the Hilton have offered student discounts in the past. However, there have been occasions where airlines such as Emirates have offered an enticing student discount.

Additionally, people with access to student discounts can sometimes get Uber and other transportation discounts. Travel companies know that students are more likely to use public transport to get around. Students can find out what companies offer discounts by looking at their online stores, checking student discount apps, and speaking to the brand directly. Some brands have secret student discount offers.

Yes, there’s a lot of trials and tribulations that come with being a student, but the experience is truly unforgettable. The discount is just one perk. Students can make friends and memories for life – and it turns out they can save some money along the way too.
